Repairing Household Plumbing

Most people think that the plumbing system in their home is really complicated and therefore are reluctant to carry out even simple plumbing tasks. In reality, a domestic plumbing system is actually quite simple. Once you understand the basic system and have gained a few basic plumbing skills there is no reason why you can't fix most plumbing problems yourself instead of having to call in an expensive plumber. A good range of plumbing tools and supplies are available from most DIY stores.

As you gain more experience you will have the confidence and knowledge, not only to do basic repairs, but even do your own plumbing projects. For example, plumbing in a new washing machine or bathroom suite, or replacing a cold water tank. Doing these yourself can save you a considerable amount of money in labour costs.

Even if you don't want to carry out any plumbing repairs yourself, just knowing how to turn off the water supply and drain the system can help reduce the damage to to your home and personal possessions while you wait for the emergency plumber to arrive. Remember, water leaks have a habit of appearing at the most awkward times - in the middle of the night and at weekends.
